Where to base yourself

Orlando is a driving city, and most long-stay guests choose one of three areas. Start from where you need to be every day, then pick the hotel.

  1. International Drive

Suits conventions, restaurants, short hops without a car

The Orange County Convention Center, restaurants and the I-Ride trolley along one long street. Busy and practical, with grocery stores on Sand Lake Road and Kirkman Road and about 20 minutes to the airport outside rush hour.

Our picks here: Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando Hotel Monreale Express & Studios I-Drive District Orlando Westgate Palace Resort The Florida Hotel & Conference Center

  2. Lake Buena Vista and Four Corners

Suits families, the parks, quieter evenings

Resorts with villas, kitchens and pools, a short drive from the theme parks. Quieter evenings and supermarkets nearby, but a car is a must for everything else.

Our picks here: Holiday Inn Club Vacations at Orange Lake Resort

  3. Dr. Phillips

Suits medical stays and longer work trips

Residential streets around Restaurant Row on Sand Lake Road, with fast access to I-4 and 20 to 25 minutes to the main hospitals downtown.

Hotel tax on long stays

Hotel stays in Orlando carry 12.5% in taxes: 6.5% Florida and Orange County sales tax plus Orange County's 6% Tourist Development Tax.

Florida applies both to any stay of six months or less, so a stay of two weeks or two months is taxed the same way. Most rates include the taxes; where a hotel collects part of them itself, the amount is shown as "Payable at the property" before you pay.

Do I need a car?

For most stays, yes. International Drive has the I-Ride trolley and ride-hailing is easy, but grocery runs, the hospitals and the parks are far apart.

Is parking included?

It varies by hotel and is listed on the hotel page. Resort fees, where a hotel charges them, often include parking and are shown as payable at the property.

When is Orlando busiest?

School holidays, the weeks around Christmas and spring break. For those dates, book the whole stay early rather than in parts.

Can I get a room with a kitchen?

Several hotels in this pick have villas, suites or studios with a kitchen or kitchenette; the room details on the hotel page say which rooms do.
